“I have no interest in your children’s books.” Ingrid smiles sweetly.
“If not that, then what do you want?” You snap, your face red with frustration. “Because memories and humanity are far too steep a price to pay for your parlor tricks.”
“From you? Mmmmm..” She looks you over, gently dangling her feet and rhythmically tapping the ground. “Well, what could you offer me? Your life is not on the line, so I see no reason to take your humanity yet. Your memories are of no uniquity, such dull pastiches of war and noble life.. And I don’t suppose you know where to find true immortality, either. To tell the truth, I don’t see what you can offer me. So, unless you’d like to offer your services as an eternal footrest, we have no deal to make.”
“How about a trade? A physical trade?” You ply forward. You reach into your rucksack–from it, you pull a handful of curios you’ve bought from the grave goods merchants since your journey’s start. “Surely one of these items must be worth your interest?”
She sighs. “Let’s see.. an old stack of papers. A fake JUDGEMENT. A choir mask. A handful of bullets, a half-eaten can of cornbeef.. And.. what’s this?”
Her eyes rest on the small, broken pocketwatch you bought from the merchant in the first shrine.
“How curious.” Ingrid remarks. “Well.. I’d be willing to trade for that, then. Break your friend’s curse in exchange for a broken pocket watch. A fair deal, no?”
“And what, exactly, would you get from a broken clock?” You glare.
“Who knows?” She smiles. “But in your hands, it’s just a broken watch. I mean that in earnest.”
