I think if you think anyone is going in blind to the risks they would be taking in Canton is frankly kind of arrogant, any good Knigga knows how lethal the system is and that things can spiral quite badly with bad rolls but thats the game and personally I think it makes for more fun when brushing with death and uncertainty than taking the surefire route to success and yes that might mean going against the odds and risking failure to an unfavorable degree.
To the second point on politics I don't actually think we've alienated the Queensmen, we have good terms with Sir Gilbern and the madlad knight seems to have a good opinon of us and if I recall correctly the language used with Sir Gilbern was non-commital enough to have wriggle room to not be clad to the commitment in Carthaggi should we choose to return home, conversly returning wouldn't lock us out from further cooperation.
The kingsguard we have little information on besides the extremely important stuff we gleaned from the ball in Pascae but granted their are influential players who have made clear what they may do to us should we cross them again.
I don't recall anything about a third faction but I can believe theirs one and there are plenty of uncommited players on the board like the Bluejays, maybe even the Vancewells now that Hast is dead.
The last thing to remember is Carthaggi is a world away and a long term commitment, it is almost wholly divorced from the affairs of Canton from what we know and we may very well be unlikely to leave once commited to the detriment of friends, families and the realm and we are underadvised as to any caveats it has in store for us once employed.
at the end of the day STV is about adventure and risk and the the knights code and not all of it can be forfilled safely.
