“Yes. The Fields of Farignane.” This would have been in the early to mid years of that period referred to as the War of Borders. Father was probably not even a squire then, the Cathagi invasion of Romaine would be years to come yet. “My grandfather was there.”
“Ah! Perhaps it was he that took my arm, eh?” The greyhair winks to show he is only joking, though there is a sombre tone in his follows as he continues. “The Flogging of Farignane, we called it. Those few of the Kingmakers Company that survived.”
“That bad?” You ask, unable to help yourself any less now than when you first heard the telling as a boy. By all accounts the Battle of Farignane was a stunning Cantôn victory. You remember sitting in Father’s halls, listen in rapturous silence as a boy to the veterans that were there. Funny to hear it again from another veteran so far apart in time and distance and fondness. Worlds and sides apart.
“We knew we were outnumbered, but when even the Pascae houses that had done well from our assistance started trickling to the other side… Well, it was only a matter of time. As our Primus Pilus would tell us, it was less about winning now and more to see what we could hold.” Fabio the Elder shakes his head. He doesn’t strike you as a man broken by battle, he speaks of your countrymen’s victory with bitterness. “When they caught us in retreat, half-across the bridge… I’ll always remember the man who ended poor Fabio’s sellsword career. A knight, like yourself but not so fine or so handsome good sir, no no. He had a green tabard… A mermaid, yes. Bearing a golden trident, and the face… Hmm, the memories of poor Fabio do not age so finely like wine. But I remember the mermaid had no face.”
You find it difficult to hold the man’s acrimony against him, despite his allegiance. The Almighty was with your people that day and that is the end of it. You hold no quarrel even if he once bore arms against the Kingdom of Heaven, this old one-armed man hardly seems a formidable enemy of the state. Not anymore at least.

We will get to the actual translation in due course, I got a little caught up in fleshing out this character that anons voted for. I’ll take this opportunity to take any questions from anon that are NOT strictly related to Admiral Moretti’s speech. I’ll assume he offers some context for you as part of his translator services. I have also not included the double success in the above update. That is still to come.
