Not just for prospecting, exploration and identifying structural features and mineral signatures, but also MONITORING for environmental regulatory reporting etc
How to make this sci-fi? What if you take the complex imaging requirements of satellites, place the processing capability at the edge and launch an ORBITAL DATACENTRE (some private space companies are actually exploring this)
Maybe a rival consortium hacks your space mining surveillance satellite, to steal the valuable imaging data or contest your territorial mining claim etc
Maybe they do something even more nefarious, and poison your rebroadcasted imagery with fake AI generated data, to make it look like you are releasing excessive POLLUTION in your space mining venture, in order to discredit your workers so that you lose your mining concession!! oh no!
-another aspect of mining is WORKPLACE ACCIDENTS and safety. I feel like this could generate a lot of scenarios and ideas (ie saboteur rival syndicalist miner factions, arrange "accidents" for each other)
Or what if the mines are run by some autonomous system governance AI, like Shodan lol but it has some glitch or flaw, and starts killing workers by accident? Who is responsible?
-is there some NGO or space charity, that is opposed to the exploitative extraction of resources? Maybe they are scientists or crazed ideological fanaticists who believe in a doctrine of inviolate planetary human nonintervention. What if these fanatics protest at your mining site? It is SPACE Greta Thunberg!
