The two men split, parting with silent nods, their faces shifting back to masks of duty. You jog ahead and greet a friendly face framed in the driver side window.
“You hung up on me.” Kimble states with a dry chuckle, but you can see the evaluation his eyes perform as you approach.
“Phone got busted when the steering wheel hit back, you missed the best part.”
“That right? You gotta tell me next time we go to Jim-” His eyes flick over your shoulder. “Hawthorne. You’re looking like someone shit in your-”
“Warden might be dirty.” Hawthorne says simply, crossing the headlights and pulling open the passenger door to Kimble’s car.
“No shit..” Kimble mumbles, eyebrows frozen in a tall arch.
“Mhm.” Hawthorne mumbles, he reaches onto the passenger seat and grips the barrel to a shotgun, moving it so he can slip into the front seat. “Raid the armory before you left?”
“That’s my personal, grabbed it out of my trunk. That’s a real M37, watch the straps man.” He turns his head to you then back to Hawthorne. “He coming?”
“Yep.” Hawthorne says flatly, his fingers slowly stroking the strap while his eyes look somewhere far away.
You hear a click and slide into the backseat as Kimble cranks his wheel and takes a wide berth around your accident, giving a nod and wave to the four other Officers who now work together carrying Dick by his ankles and wrists, you can’t help but smile a little seeing someone like him trussed up like a roasted pig. As you drive down the one open lane remaining the atmosphere of the car is… tense. To put it mildly.
“So the warden..” Kimble begins, giving Hawthorne a side eye. “You really think he’s dirty?”
“Dunno.” Hawthorne says, his grip tightening around the strap. “But I’m gonna find out.”
“You sure you wanna be the one asking the questions? You still look pretty amped up to me..” His voice trails off, it’s a tone you’ve heard before. Is he fishing?
Hawthorne exhales through his nose as he closes his eyes.
“I’m fine.”
“You don’t look it. You look pissed.” He glances in the rearview and catches your gaze. “Does he know?”
