An uncomfortable silence stretched between you and Glass. He picked up your meaning, and for a moment, that cheerful glint left his eyes. Ester was looking between the two of you with a concerned expression.
“Don’t worry. I’ve got Iara on air defense. She can swat down anyone that tries to sneak up on us from above.”
You gave him a thumbs up.
“Good. And speaking of keeping people out, I think we should speak with Nature Girl about reopening the park.” you proposed.
“It’d be wrong to keep everyone else out. We’re supposed to share this space.”
Glass nodded.
“I know. I’m gonna talk to her about it later today. She’s just worried that the others will ruin the park.”
“If I were you, I’d be worried about the state sending someone to stop you from setting up shop here in the park. They don’t take too kindly to non-taxpayers.”
This had been your chief concern ever since you found out that the Morlocks were going to start living in Central Park. And from the look on Glass’ face, it had been bothering him as well.
“Believe me. I know better than anyone what it's like to be run out of somewhere by the cops. So long as we can find a way to contribute to the city’s development, then they might be willing to let us stay.”
“There are a few ways we can accomplish that, I think. Are you and the others still willing to meet up with Sable about the whole ‘bounty hunting’ thing?” you asked.
“Iara and Robbie want to, but I think that’s only because they think it’ll be fun. Callisto might be up for it too, so long as she isn’t away from the Alley for too long. The same goes for me, too.” Glass said.
“Why? Do you think they’ll let us stay if we work for Sable?”
You shook your head.
“Probably not. Sable’s interests and the interests of the state won’t always coincide, and she doesn’t have enough influence to strongarm any government officials into letting you guys stay here for as long as you want.”
“So…what are our options?”
“Well…we can try and see if we can’t legally acquire a plot of land for you guys. If we take out a few loans, save up money from bounty hunting jobs, and speak to the right people, then we might be able to swing it. Lucky for you guys, I can introduce you to someone who might be interested in helping you.”
“Of course you do.” Glass said with a good-natured sigh.
“Her name’s Cassandra Webb, and she’s something of a philanthropist. She works with other heroes sometimes, so I’m sure she wouldn’t have a problem working with mutants. She and her tech genie should be able to help you acquire some property for you and the other Morlocks.”
That, and the Morlocks would make great additions to the Order of The Web. But that was a conversation that was better left for after introductions were made.
Glass paused to contemplate the issue.
