The student reached out, hands trembling in spite of a deep breath. Her fingers brushed the cool stone of the blue spear. The blue sigil coiled like a snake, then shot up her fingers, ice flooding her veins as the spear circled her arm, moving as easily on her skin as a snake on the earth. Then it tightened, pain dropping her to her knees, breath billowing out of her like steam, a layer of frost spreading out from her arm, creeping up her chest.
Something was wrestling inside of her, something foreign and strange, forced into her body. She staggered, slamming into the wall, gasping as air came out of her colder than it went in. She had to get this out of her, find it inside of her, grab hold, take control…The student grabbed the tattooed arm where the spear slithered, gasping at the sheer cold of her own arm, and slammed it against the wall.
“My arm!”
The spear reared back on her arm, tightening down. The student snarled back.
“Mine!”
She slammed the arm against the wall again, pain throbbing through her. She tightened her grip around the spear as it squirmed on her arm. Frost spread down her other arm, but the tighter she gripped the more right things felt. A spear in her hand, a weapon to hold back the world. Not a flashy tool, but always useful. The word ripped up through her chest and out of her mouth.
<span class="mu-b">“Arx!”</span>
The ice rushed out of her, draining from head to toes, then burst from the ground, a spear of ice that slammed into the wall and shattered. The wall wobbled, then fell backwards with a thud. The student leaned against the wall, slowly sliding to the floor, staring at the now docile blue spear on her arm. She had been exiled for collecting grimoires, trying to decipher their secrets, trying to find the power of magic, and now it was nestled in her arm.
“Arx.” Another spear of ice sprang from the ground, shattering against the wall. She stood up, and walked unsteadily back down the hall. Another wall with three circles. Lovely.
> A white skeletal arm?
> A red face? Are those horns?
> A blue…is that a beak? Talons?
That's all for the night. It'll probably be one update a day from here on out, but wanted to get past the introduction quickly.
