You could add a tuning apparatus which would cause it to eat up less power. Hell, you've been reading how people bypass the resonator completely by drawing magic directly from the blood. But that requires more conduits and tubing that you don't have the supplies for.
As for the armor. Installing an amp to boost its negation properties seems like the way to go. It'll be like a more complete forcefield around the user. Though not a proper one as that would require a specially programmed computer chip with the spell format written into it. And it would require additional batteries to try and maintain it for any reasonable length of time. I probably have only enough time for one of these projects today...
