The bees of a hive serve their queen dutifully and without question – there is no room for deviation or individuality. The beast-bringers observe this lesson and apply it to their society by punishing those who celebrate any culture other than Protavic culture. This is usually accomplished by shunning but in the most extreme cases, the practice of seal-clubbing for sport or possession of scrimshaw is punishable by confiscation of property.
This crackdown on Toprocravic culture quickly snuffs out any deviant behaviour that the emigrants bring with them. Within a couple of years of their arrival, most newcomers renounce their old ways. Only the most diehard sealskins cling to the prior customs and practice them in private. The majority of the Protavic people are pleased with this development. In fact, it becomes common for outsiders to be viewed with contempt and seen as inferior. Of course the beast-bringers will smile and offer them gifts and barter with them, but it's all a ruse, a way of keeping the lesser tribes docile.
A generation passes.
Reeds taken from the shore of the Croglatol have been an important part of Protavic craftsmanship since the tribe's inception. Not only do they make an ideal roofing material, but they are used for making clothes, nets, ropes and many other items – until now. It has been found that by stripping away the stems of certain plants, slender yet durable fibres can be extracted from them.

Though reeds are still used for roofing, these newly discovered bast fibres replace them in almost every other field. However, there is one particular use for this revolutionary material that the Protavic people will focus on, more than any other.
They could focus on making bows. This weapon has only just been invented with the discovery of this fibre. At this point, they are ineffective and only used for hunting small animals. But if the Protavic develop a strong interest in archery, they could turn it into the deadliest weapon of the era.
They could focus on making clothes. Garments made out of pigskin, fur and woven reeds are quickly being phased out in favour of fabric made out of this fibre, but the Protavic could take it to the next level. By developing more sophisticated methods of spinning thread from fibres, they could make truly marvellous clothes.
They could focus on making ropes and nets. Already, the use of bast fibre instead of reeds is producing far stronger ropes and nets, but the Protavic could develop superior techniques. This would lead to far more durable tools that could be used for all sorts of applications and greatly enhance the efficiency of most workers.
