> The Battlefield, try to get some more information on this place
The decision was fairly trivial to make, the battlefield was the only place without a lurking menace. She worked her way back down the two ruins and over to the field of debris.
The battlefield was a macabre place to be. The space was marked by dead soil and scorched earth, deep gashes and earth upheaved into mounds. Weathered skeletons in tatters of clothing abounded, a concerning number ripped to pieces, bones sliced cleanly through, others snapped more roughly.
Mel worked through bodies and debris methodically, turning over bodies and bits of rubble. Rotting bundles of paper, strange rusted and crumbled metal implements were piled into her satchel. Shattered bottles were tossed aside, some still corked or sealed. A few small treasures were uncovered and pocketed. Shattered and snapped wands were frequent finds and several larger pieces of wood were discovered, carefully carved in a similar fashion to a wand, but with different patterns and designs, artistic flourishes of birds in flight added in a few places. She piled them up for the moment, her bag was full enough as it was, maybe she could have the golem pick them up and save her the trouble. There was probably enough for a second pass if she wanted to take the time.
She took a swig from her canteen, and was just considering whether to head for home, or to scrounge a bit more when the whistling noise started. She jerked around until her eyes found the object, arcing down from the sky, screaming as the wind clawed at it. She scrambled back, gaining distance until it slammed into the ground, tremor rattling her feet, a spray of dirt and bones shooting into the air.
Mel peered at the object, a jagged black rock, covered in spiral symbols that seemed to shimmer and twitch. Two of the symbols shot off the rock, revealing themselves as smoke, then unfurled like a snake and pounced out, slipping into the old skeletons littering the field. A moment later the ancient bones lifted up as if by puppet strings, tendrils of smoke curled around them. Two skeletons, maybe three more symbols on the black rock…Mel’s eyes narrowed as one skeleton grabbed a length of wood and the other a chunk of masonry. Probably not here to talk.
