Most died nameless deaths but a few held on, refined their multi-stomachs to process even more nutrition and reached a point where a single Lump Grazer would keep them fed for most of a Terran week and the slightest scrap of Stone Moss could keep them shuffling for hours longer. By merit of raw biological efficiency, a stable population of Shufflers have survived and with the newly-invigorated Growth Strands, show no signs of dying off any time soon.
