“Dekor Kenon.” In your eyes, he is the obvious choice. Experience is invaluable and none of the other candidates have any at all. He does not possess Mok's aversion to conflict, nor is he as reckless as Ghetar seems to be – his approach to flight control appears to be balanced and should the Onager find itself caught in an asteroid field or an ion storm, you can rely on Kenon to manoeuvrer the ship out of harm's way with minimal damage.
“The Onager is a warship,” Karzek states. “The last time that Glinn Kenon found himself in a combat situation was three years ago. An incident involving Breen privateers, I believe. Do you truly believe that he should serve as the helmsman of a battlecruiser?”
“If you are saying that he was able to escape from the Breen Confederacy despite piloting one of the least manoeuvrable ships in the fleet, then yes, I am certain that he is the best candidate out of these three.” A lack of conviction is a sign of weakness. You have made your decision, and you refuse to back down just because the legate is challenging your judgement. “Glinn Kenon shall serve as my helmsman, legate.”
Without providing any additional comment, Karzek takes the PADD and locks in your decision. The room is silent aside from the occasional jingle from the handheld device. By the time that the legate passes it back to you, there are four more candidates on the screen.
“Finally, the chief engineer. They will be responsible for the maintenance of the Onager's systems and management of the engineering bay, from which a Galor-class cruiser can be controlled during emergencies. Additionally, they shall serve as your third officer.”
Akrat Desset is the candidate with the best test results – the legate seems to have a habit of starting with the most qualified option. While he has performed exceptionally well in simulations, he is somewhat eccentric and prone to micromanagement rather than delegation.
Elrana Vekt is a female candidate – the engineering bay is possibly the only place on a warship where a woman can be found without raising eyebrows. She defies gender stereotypes by excelling at matters of management and organisation, while her skill as an engineer is somewhat lacking.
Dann Rhetalar has prior experience, much like Dekor Kenon. He has served as the engineer of a Hideki-class frigate for the last five years. While he has valuable experience, he is used to working with a smaller vessel – will his expertise be of any use on a battlecruiser?
Atalana Modan is another female candidate, and a colonial yokel to boot. According to her record, she is prone to jury rigging, utilising alternative energy sources and other forms of 'frontier engineering.' This will only be useful if the Onager is stuck in a situation that prevents it from receiving regular maintenance.
