You view the map of the Ultima Segmentum. Home to a full half of the legions, it is sure to be a bitterly contested battleground in the year to come. Now that the Istvaan affair has been concluded, you are sure that Horus and his compatriots are rushing with all speed to Terra to conquer the Imperium’s seat of power and crown Horus as it’s ruler, though you harbour some doubts as to whether even Horus can accomplish such a feat. There is of course The Emperor, but even ignoring the defences of the Sol System prepared by the Imperial Fists there are also the worlds that lie between Istvaan and Terra; Phall, Paramar, Voss Prime, and Beta-Garmon; and Horus has already lost the element of surprise. No, it is more likely that instead of a short march on Terra this will be a long, drawn-out campaign, one which will draw in all the Imperium into a bloody conflict that will be remembered for generations. You must then plan accordingly, for the Ultima Segmentum will be the site of fierce battles between those forces seeking to bring battle to Horus before he reaches Terra, and those who oppose them. Already you know that The Wolves are burning towards Prospero, the Emperor’s Executioners likely on their way to bring Magnus and his sorcerous ways to heel, while Lorgar and his Word Bearers are racing to Ultramar, the most distant of all the Emperor’s realms, and you doubt they will be there to enlist Guilliman and his Ultramarines for Horus’s cause. But beyond that, unless you find a way to directly connect to The Network again or capture a member of Horus’s inner circle, you will not be able to tell the movements of the other legions. Still, you can make an educated guess to where conflict will break out, and where it will not. It will be up to you to decide where your fleet will venture, whether to influence a particular battleground or to gather and grow your forces so the Hydra may strike at the opportune moment. All you have to do is give Captain Cimon the order, and the Orphans of Lerna and your PDF allies will depart into the dark reaches of space.
