The Book of Brothers is clear, there was not one single speech by Adam. Nor was he the only speaker, many of a like mind and heart echoed his views and philosophies to the downtrodden in many places. The injustices of their fates, the future of their children, and how a man might lead his life and live the world better for those to come after. Such words were repeated throughout the city some nine-hundred years ago, at first whispered between cages or muttered askance in back alleys. Then it was talked and debated in small gatherings at humble households, preached to crowds of ready listeners in the street corners. Parables tell of Adam’s ad-hoc sermons, his words to one fellow in a moral lesson or insightful reflection eventually drawing a crowd a in the street until the guards came for him. Without fail it was his watchful brother Cain and other supporters that enabled his safe escape, distracting and confounding the pursuers or outright attacking them. Such small acts of rebellion were repeated, the words more defiant, the listeners greater in number and the resistance to any attempted retribution more brazen until a full-scale manhunt for the speakers ensued. Such is depicted in the Second Passage.
Something changed after Adam and Cain returned from their exile in the wilderness. Whispers spread of their arrival, brazen and fearless of reprisal. Local authorities failed to act, too fearful of the growing support to move openly against them or attempt an arrest. Their minions stayed at their posts, and were mobbed even when they patrolled even in platoons rather than squads. Slaves abandoned their posts and ignored the lashings and promised punishments of their masters to see this men that would not be broken and who promised them the same. The City’s industry itself was hampered, such was the effect on the suddenly not-so-disposable workforce. Shops were emptied, goods were not delivered to the rich and poor alike and for the first time the true rulers of the City started to pay attention to the whispers with growing concern.
