The old man shook his head. "Ulfred will not harm you now that he and you have met." Ulfred seemed to stir at the old man's words and Wilhelm stepped backward once more. Ulfred's eye opened and he began to rise. When he saw Wilhelm he bared his teeth and snarled.
"No, Ulfred!" cried the wizened old man. "This is Wilhelm." Ulfred made to lunge to one side, to get around the old man at Wilhelm, but the old man raised his staff. "No, Ulfred," he said, more gently. "This is Wilhelm." Ulfred glanced from the wizened old man to Wilhelm with a surly glare. "Go and make a fire in the hearth," the old man said to Ulfred. When Ulfred remained in place the old man gestured with his staff. "I will join you soon."
