Outsiders who would try to exploit the Protavic people are punished with slavery. They spend the rest of their lives serving the beast-bringers as chattel, on the same level as the animals that the tribe herds. They perform the tasks that are considered undesirable by most of the tribesmen, such as cleaning and construction. Thanks to the hardship that they endure, the Protavic are free to spend more time tending to their beasts and honing their minds.
The prospect of slavery is enough to convince many of the Grovic to leave the beast-bringers alone, which leads to a decline in the number of thefts and kidnappings. There are those who sympathise with the plight of their servants – they believe that the surfeit of essence that men harbour elevates them above all other animals and that it is wrong to treat humans like property. However, the vast majority of the tribe has no issue with this development.
A generation passes.
Not every outsider who joins the tribe is brought in as a slave. Visits from the boat-dwelling Toprocravic are frequent, as there are many who seek to trade sealskin leather and pieces of scrimshaw for pots of honey and beeswax figurines. When they come to the Protavic, they are treated as guests of honour. They get to enjoy the intoxicating taste of butol during sacred feasts and play games of blocrum with their hosts. Before long, a lot of these visitors start to feel more at home among the beast-bringers than their own people.
Several of the sealskins defect to our tribe with every year that passes. When the Toprocravic finally discover where all of their tribesmen are disappearing to, some of their leaders are outraged and demand the return of their people. This development threatens to reduce the budding friendship that the Protavic have with the boat-dwellers.
The defectors could be accepted. They came to our tribe because they admired its culture and its prosperity. It is only right that they are allowed to become a part of it.
The defectors could be returned. The Protavic are not a tribe of warriors, they cannot afford to earn the ire of yet another tribe. Give the deserters back to the clan that they came from.
The defectors could be paid for. By paying a ransom for each of the sealskins who wish to join them, the beast-bringers may be able to appease the leaders of the Toprocravic tribe.
>Accept the defectors.
>Return the defectors.
>Pay for the defectors.
