It makes sense, this Village is pretty big and does have a lot of people.
When Reisen is sent off on her way with the Yen needed to rent the book, you take your time shopping around this quarter of the village, picking up a selection of some snacks and such that you'd think you'd like best. You know what? Given everything you've seen so far, you weren't about to risk being wrong on those beans working as an anti-Oni agent, so you gladly buy some of those too.
The lantern can freely hang attached to your belt. Never know when you'll need a flask for water either. The tent you stuff into the sack to cushion the other valuables. The calligraphy set? Might come in handy, who knows. For now, you choose to just use the Hanbo you purchase as a walking stick, you did something similar with a big stick you found on vacation to the Appalachia mountains in 2017 so it felt nostalgic and the quarterstaff was long enough.
When Reisen returns with the book, it is decidedly the point at which you believe you're all set for now. This should last you long enough for the trip to see whatever specialist you were in for and back now, and your Rabbit partner in crime was eager to get on her way too, to help solve this Incident so she could receive due credit!
