Unfortunately, it's you who gets tired early; the path has more sand in it than you remember, which you know to make it harder to run or jog than it is to walk. It is only when you find an empty water bottle, surrounded by wet sand -- which tells you it was gulped down in a hurry -- that you realize Karl has outrun you.
Looking further down the path, you see a figure scarpering along. Barring an attempt to climb into the mountain, the monastery is the only place he can be going to. Past that, he might head to the Big Hole cave complex, or to Numea on the other side of the mountain, or he might in fact seek sanctuary.
