The serpent he defeated might have been a Nabathean dragon from Fodlan. Problem is, we don't have enough god damn info, and Tristain has even less, because he has no idea what snakes are, how they use Agarthium, how they tinker with crests.
Although this could end up being irrelevant, because it seems like we might not be dealing with actual snakes this time, just a legacy of long dead ones.
