He won't really see the consequences even if it fails -- he'd be assassinated and replaced, sparing him irrelevance and physical/mental decline. Alternatively, he'll achieve some measure of success and be lauded by his nation as the man who revived Russia's superpower status. Either way, he will be written of in history books forever.
