> Learn a new spell: Emit Light (Rune Intro)
Mel woke up to a new day, thoughts of mysterious runes and dead forests rolling around in her mind. Not even pausing for food she cracked open ‘Student of Magic’ and flipped to the section on Rune Circles.
Rune Circles are often taught as one of the earliest schools of magic, and indeed, with the proper magical materials even a common layman might construct a circle and give it power, provided they follow the exacting instructions required to create a circle. Rune magic is the magic of the earth, stable, sturdy, and long lasting. The first step in any rune magic is choosing the target of your spell. Marble slabs are a favorite of the traditionalist, but this text recommends something simpler like pen and paper for experimentation. You must have some way to mark, etch, or carve the object in question, the more stable and long lasting the better.
The second step is of course to etch, draw, or carve your runic circle into the target. This text includes an example runic circle that will make a target glow. I find this is quite useful on a stave or lantern, making a bright white light at the second tier of power that is without heat or flicker. Quite superior to a common torch!
A note on the layout of the common or standard rune circle you see here. The outermost ring of circles are 'Power' points, these should typically be left alone, these locations are for the burning of mana infused candles and effigies. The inner ring of circles are 'Restriction' points, runes and/or objects placed here restrict or modify the spell, typically modifying who, what, when or where it targets. The cluster of three spaces at the center of the circle are 'Effect' points, the runes placed here directly determine what the rune does.
The final step is of course to fill the rune with mana with the Vitae spell at the level you wish the rune to activate. The rune should remain active for 24 hours. You can recast Vitae within this time period to extend the time, and accumulating five casts within one continuous period will cause the rune to reach a semi-permanent state, even weak tier 1 runes can be expected to last 2-3 years in this state, and a single recast of vitae will bring the rune surging back to life for more years of use.
