Picture the wild, or a life or death situation, stuff like that.
If a paranoid being is right, it is aware and ready to respond. If it is wrong, then it just scared itself, life goes on.
On the other hand, if a non-paranoid being is right, then all is fine, life goes on. But, if it is wrong, they're dead.
In paranoia, you're either right and can brace yourself, or wrong and safe. It's a win/win.
No matter how absurd, there's always wisdom to be found in paranoia.
