>SELECTED: A coded cipher from your oldest siblings, Young Lord Damien Andrei Young Lady Roselyn Andrei. It is mostly concerned with the business of the house in your absence, as well as some report and discussion which gleans a rough overview of the politics at home. [Letter from Damien and Roselyn]
You’re well versed enough in the codes of your siblings that deciphering the message from your elder brother and sister is quite literally child’s play. Although you quickly realise that most of the code encompasses a personal touch on the letter’s content rather than just the bald communique of facts you’d expect in a clandestine Reginae report or something similar. Your siblings must have had a lot of time on their hand. In the relative coolness of the afternoon in the reflecting gardens of the Church of Evanescence you read the first in a long line of letters from your family members, finishing with the most recent dispatch penned only a week ago.
Little Brother Dearest,
I hope this letter finds you well, wiser and holier for your pilgrimage. It pleases us that you have done what you set out to achieve on errantry, and you’ll doubtless be satisfied to no end that talk around the family table is all ‘Where do you think Emmy is right now?’, ‘Has Emmy slain another monster or crusaded another heathen yet?’ and ‘Do you think Emmy remembered to brush his teeth?’ Honestly, their obsession with our heroic little brother and his exploits is becoming quite unbearable.
Well this is definitely Roselyn’s handiwork. Frankly you’re not sure why she bothered to encode this particular paragraph, unless it was to perhaps ensure you’d read it for fear of missing out of vital family intelligence.
A Sir Cato de Ferros passed on your letters home early this Kostrimun, bringing news that your ship had berthed at Rochefort before continuing on across the Cathagi strait. You should know the family was overjoyed to hear you were in safe condition and good spirits, although I can imagine that this means at least some of our letters destined for the Order of the Trident lodging in Langland will return to us unread. If you have not received anything from us since Langland this letter will serve as an update as what has transpired at home while you have gone about your pilgrimage business.
The engagement of our pretty airhead sister to Sir Simon Norveski has been formally announced, with the wedding to be held after the passing of Ardenfall and coming of spring on the first Sandag of Savrimun. If you haven’t received a flowery letter from her personally you can consider this your invitation now. And you will never believe who is just happened to yesterday invite us to invite them to call upon Castle Andrei for dinner whilst they are enroute to visit the Duchess Romaine’s Court this spring. Go on, guess. Mother, Anastazja and I were up all night talking about it.
Again, did Roselyn really have to encode this?
