The actor who plays "Romero" looks very cool, he only has a small cameo role in Escape From New York, but he also plays a gang member "White Warlord" in Carpenter's original Assault on Precinct 13 (1976) in the famous ice cream scene, where he guns down a child by an ice cream van in cold blood.
Anyway, here is a picture of "Romero" dispatching the dystopian dark future New York law enforcement assault rifle death squad, sending them all scarpering back to their helicopter gunships in retreat, with nothing more than a mocking psychotic skullface taunt whilst holding the American President / hostage's severed finger. I feel this is a good metaphor for the process behind an election year
