“It’s good to see you Artemus,” you offer as the door closes behind you, “And what’s this about a job?”
“Straight to the point? Very well. I’m sure you’ve heard about the Secret Service,” he smiles and lights a cigarette and sighs, “Proving beyond a doubt that it was exceptionally misnamed,”
“Security and Intelligence; protection of the office of the President, investigation of counterfeiting and dealing with fringe investigations?” you offer the things you’ve heard.
“Quite right, and speaking of fringe investigations, your gadgeteering was brought to our attention by multiple parties,” he sits back, “And I want to hire you as an agent of the Service as a field technician,”
“I’m flattered, but civil service isn’t something I really expected of-”
“Expectation and need are seldom in step…” Artemus looks tired, the wide eyed genius of your youth seems so much older now, “And I have more fires in need of being put out than I have resources. I’m subcontracting the Pinkertons, but that can only go so far,”
You pause at that, not being the biggest fans of the Pinkerton Detective Agency.
“We’ve a caseload that requires a keen mind, willing to stretch itself against the boundaries of what we believe to be possible and what we believe to be impossible. Rumor of advanced technologies and esoteric practices achieving wonders applied with decidedly heinous intent…strange things are happening in the West. Things that if left unattended will dispoil the American Experiment,” he flourishes and places a badge on the desk, “Please, Diego I need more people out there whose judgment and aptitude I can trust,”
