>>5394857Perhaps you should consult Corrine on what you should do. As one of the only people in your life who understands what you’re dealing with, she should be able to provide some valuable insight. Upon returning to the barracks, you find your Lieutenant already waiting for you within a makeshift tent serving as your temporary seat of command.
“There you are. How did things go? Did Damian and Yara actually find out anything useful?” She asks.
You fill her in on your conversation with Elias, and the upcoming mission to Edmund. As you go further and further into detail on just what awaits you, her face continuously grimaces and sneers, to the point you fear it may be stuck that way permanently.
“So, if I understand correctly, we’re to trust this stranger we just met to lead us through a haunted forest crawling with Demonic Beasts, to fight a group of assassins from the Orthodox Church, being led by a shapeshifter seeking to genocide a village whose population are likely other shapeshifters. Did I understand that correctly?”
>“Well they’re not really called shapeshifters…”“That’s not the point, Blair!” She yells at you, poking you in the chest. “Say all of this is true, and we find some village of people like Kronya and Solon. Then what? Are we going to genocide them ourselves? It sounds as though we’d be better off letting these Orthodox goons do the work for us and then take them out ourselves.”
>“Elias says they’re not affiliated with the same group those two belonged to.” You say, rubbing the spot Corrine poked. “In any case, we won’t find out unless we go there ourselves. It’s been five years, Corrine. This is the first real trail we’ve had in five years! We can’t just let it go cold. We have to see what’s in this Arcadia for ourselves.”Corrine growls. “You’d better have that damned Blessed Lance ready to go. I didn’t follow you all those years ago to end up…digesting! In some Goddess forsaken haunted forest!”
>“I was thinking…given that this is the first time we’ll be on a mission centered on finding out more about that group. Maybe I should come clean to the others? You know, on the existence of those shapeshifters?”A pregnant pause follows, where Corrine simply stares at you bewildered. She grabs both your ears and pulls them roughly.
“Have you gone completely mad?!” She yells. “Because that’s what they’re going to ask you if you tell them that there’s a cabal of shapeshifting freaks masquerading in the highest positions of the Empire!”
>“Okay! Point noted! Quit it!”“They’re mercs, Blair.” She says. “Like it or not, their loyalty is to coin, and extends as far as you being able to provide both that, and victory. If we’re paying for this job out of our treasury, that covers the first. Now you just need to supply the second.”
