“I get the spider mutation part,” you began, rubbing the back of your head. “But what about that whole ‘lizard’ thing?”
Connors’ eyes darted around the room nervously. “I, uh…I might have been using my own body to conduct a series of rather…controversial experiments.” he muttered
“Define ‘controversial’.”
“...I injected myself with reptile DNA.” he said quickly.
WHAT THE FUCK!? Why? Why would anyone do something so stupid and not expect there to be any side-effects?
“And that seemed like a good idea to you?” you asked in complete disbelief. “There’s ‘crazy’, and then there’s ‘batshit insane’. Wanna guess which category you fall into, or should I give you a hint?”
“...I did it to regrow my arm. And my experiment was, more or less, a success! But there were…unfortunate side effects.” he said, feeling at his scales. “For the most part, I was able to hide them from my family, and I was taking daily doses of a genetic cleansing agent that was helping me to keep things under control.”
“But then you got bit by one of your spiders and it gave your DNA a juice boost.” you concluded. Connors nodded slowly.
“But I’m not clumsy enough to let one of our spiders out of their enclosures. Especially on a day when there would be so many people entering and leaving our lab. Someone’s been letting them out, I think.” he proclaimed, before staring directly into your eyes. “I think someone’s using us as…test subjects.”
It was a declaration that made your blood run cold. Just the idea that your very origin as a metahuman could’ve been orchestrated, or even worse, monitored.
“Do you know who might be behind this?” you asked carefully.
Connors shook his head. “This experiment has changed many hands over the past couple of years. Between my people, the bioengineers at Oscorp and Horizon Labs’ specialists, I can’t say for certain who might be directly responsible for this. It could be one person, or it could be an entire team.” he said, rubbing his chin thoughtfully.
He returned his gaze to you then, his expression being one of confidence. “I know you don’t owe me anything, but if you could help me get to the bottom of this, then we might be able to save a lot of innocent people.” he declared.
What will you say?
>”I owe you more than you think, Doc. I’ll see what I can do.”
>”If you want my help, then I’m gonna need a list of the most likely suspects that you can think of.”
>”I’ll need access to your lab, and anything else that might prove useful during my investigation. I also charge by the hour.”
>”What’ll you give me in return? I’m a busy guy.”
>”How many of these spiders did you make? Can they create more people like you and me?”
>”Just out of curiosity, what would happen if one of these spiders bit me again?”
