“So you’re familiar with the concept.”

“Yes. I’ve encountered a few people who used the technology to further the goals of the Supreme Intelligence. But if my memory serves correctly, Quantum Swapping must be initiated by both parties. It cannot occur if one of the linked users does not consent to it. That is, unless the Bands are severely damaged and in need of repair.”

“How can you tell if they’re damaged?”

“Do you have them with you now?”

“Yeah. Do you mind if I pull you into a video call?”

“I will require assistance if I am to take part in such a thing.”

Despite being a member of a super advanced alien race, helping Van navigate your sister’s smartphone felt a little like providing tech support to your grandma. She did eventually get it, though, and her blue face filled the screen as she accepted the video call. Only, she was too close to the screen, and you could practically see her pores.

“Back up a bit, Papa Smurf. Check it out.”

You flipped your camera around to show her the Nega Bands lying on the table. She hummed thoughtfully, tilted her head to the side and leaned in to squint. Her fingers were sliding across the screen, to no avail.

“Enhance.”

When nothing happened, she frowned a bit.

“Computer, enhance.”

Siri answered before you did.

“Sorry, I didn’t catch that.”

“I-I can just move it around for you.”

“Your technology is terrifyingly primitive at times.”

“Hey! This phone isn’t more than 3 years old. I just haven’t had time to get a new one.”

You moved the phone and the gauntlets around a bit, making sure that Van could see them from every angle before making her judgment.

“I do not see anything obviously wrong with them. Putting them on should be safe.”

“Should be?”

“I am not there to inspect them in person. Unless you would like me to travel there to meet you, this is all I can provide. Trying to explain the technology behind such complex devices would take far too long.”

Hm. Knowing her, she probably could just teleport here in the blink of an eye. It would give you peace of mind, but you weren’t sure how safe it would be. There was still a demon army hiding in the city, and you didn’t want your sister teleporting within the range of dangerous criminals who would like nothing more than to get some dirt on you and leverage your weaknesses. There was also the matter of her laying low in your sister’s house.

“Give us the ‘how and why’.” you said, drawing everyone’s attention to you. “Go ahead and start wherever you’d like. I know this is going to be a long story to answer those two questions.”

Victoria stared at you for a while, before nodding gratefully. She took a deep breath, and then launched right into her explanation.

“My name is Va Nee Gast, pilot of the ‘Voyager’, daughter of En Dwi Gast, and potential heir to the mantle of Grandmaster.” she announced.

You all exchanged confused looks. That was…a lot to unpack. But nothing could have prepared you for what she said next.

“The one you’ve come to know, Victoria Parker, was an identity I created in order to blend into your society. She is my alter.”

Richard frowned. “What do you mean by that?”

“It means that she is a personality that I constructed as the perfect cover.” Va Nee answered. “She has individual thoughts and individual memories. For all intents and purposes, she is her own person. For the majority of her time here, I have remained dormant within the deepest depths of her subconscious, only surfacing for emergencies.”

“You didn’t think that an attack from a vampire was an emergency?” you asked, trying to keep the bitterness out of your voice.

She nodded apologetically. “I had intended to intervene as soon as her call with you ended, but the ‘vampire’ as you call her was able to prevent me from surfacing by placing Victoria in a hypnotic trance. I appreciate you saving the both of us.” she said, panning her gaze around the whole room to focus on everyone’s face in turn. “All of you have gone to great lengths to ensure her safety. I cannot thank you enough.”

You ran a hand through your hair and breathed out a sigh that caused your cheeks to puff out slightly. You were finding it hard to wrap your head around this. And judging from the other’s expressions, they had similar feelings.

However, you couldn’t help but notice that Flint looked a little less grim when Va Nee declared that she and Vic were technically “different people”.

“But, I’m sure you’re all wondering why I’m here now, in this form. That is a longer and…more complicated story, I am afraid. I shall do my best to summarize.”

All of you leaned closer, eager to learn the true identity of this “imposter”.

Va Nee closed her eyes and inhaled deeply. When she opened them again, they were glowing a bright shade of violet.

“This another one of your friends?” Nico asked, eyeing her cautiously.

“Something like that.” you muttered.

Victoria chose to remain silent, giving Nico the same cautious, but curious glances that she herself was receiving.

“We need to get to Empire State University. You know how to get there, right?” you asked.

Victoria nodded slowly. “I do, yes. And I will take you there.” she replied. “But I am afraid that I cannot go with you. I have already exposed myself more than I’d like, and drawing further attention to myself would only invite more trouble in the future.”

What will you say?
