For her resourcefulness and her clever ways, the woman known as Glavolan is celebrated by the entire tribe. All of the Protavic know of her and tell tales about how her silver tongue garnered the aid of the blood-drinker. Of course, few of them know the truth – that she suggested that the beast-bringers should join the Vuvovic in their profane revelry. Fortunately, the leaders of the families do not wish to risk internal strife by sullying the name of their tribe's heroine.
Ingenuity becomes a virtue among the Protavic people. Children are given riddles and puzzles to solve, in order to encourage them to think outside of the box. While there is value in orthodoxy, the beast-bringers praise those who are able to innovate, even if it means going against the traditions of the tribe and the wisdom of one's forebears.

A generation passes.
Of all of the tribes that dwell on the shores of Croglatol, the Protavic are by far the most prosperous. Few of them know what it is like to go hungry and thanks to the abundance of sustenance, families are now able to support far more children. Yet as their numbers swell, the families of the Protavic find themselves growing apart from each other during this period of plenty.

Glavolan, now the elderly head of the Bupac bloodline, summons the other leaders of the Protavic in order to confront this issue. If the tribe is to endure for generations to come, she believes that the families must discard the disparate practices that separate them.
In order to accomplish this, she believes that all of the great families must adopt a shared method of selecting their leaders, instead of having their own individual processes.
Leaders could be selected according to their wealth. The one who owns the most beasts is clearly the most influential beast-bringer and should lead their family.
Leaders could be selected in a contest of wits. The one who is judged to be the cleverest and most cunning should be given the responsibility of leading their family.
Leaders could be selected according to their essence. Through peculiar rituals, the Drocrom of the candidates is assessed and the one with the mightiest spirit is selected.
Leaders could be selected by the people. The men and women of the family should have the right to choose the person that they believe is the most deserving of leading them.
Leaders could be selected according to family traditions. Glavolan is wrong, there is nothing wrong with each family having its own practices and customs.
