>>5963487“Where’d you meet Victoria, Kai?” Cannon watches with interest as the two women walk away - he’s old, not dead. Elsewhere, someone fires off a rocket launcher - the launch startles you enough that you turn to watch the projectile streaking far off into the distance before it self-detonates slightly beyond its maximum range. Cheers of ‘it works!’ erupt from a few of the Nomads close to the man who fired it.
“She knew my dad, they worked together.” You let him fill in the blanks.
“...Thought I’d seen her before, hair was different then, and the clothes. Get caught up in the cuts? Heard about that, Dakota’s been chattering all day about it.”
“Yeah. She’s staying at my place for now, couldn’t make rent.”
“She’s got a box of guns over there, she could make rent.” Cannon shakes his head. He’s got a point. “...Might’ve just wanted a change of scenery.”
“Spoken like a Nomad.” You comment back, watching how well Vicky is just sliding into things here - perhaps she really is just trying to cut off her old life. Sometimes pain is too hard to face head on, even if you don’t consciously realize you’re trying to avoid it. “Maybe so. She’s a hell of a shot, and has connections on the force still - and experience.”
“Twenty three? Twenty four?” Cannon questions, “Can’t be that experienced. Badges do more paperwork than fighting.”
“A lot closer to thirty.” You correct him, “And she zeroed a couple of gangoons just this morning. Used a revolver.”
“...What kind?” The old Nomad asks the question so seriously you almost laugh.
“A Metel.”
“Ugh, blasphemy!” Cannon shudders, apparently given revolver enthusiast heebie jeebies by the mere mention of the magazine fed revolver, “Those things aren’t natural, Kai. It’s a platypus of a handgun. …How’d it do?”
“Took their limbs off. Some kind of explosive ammo I think, had a hell of a crack to it.” You don’t linger on that part of the story much longer, the sight of the mangled bodies still fresh in your thoughts, “I got to use my new deck too.”
“Ah, Taro’d be proud.” Cannon leans back slightly to glance at your neck, “He always said you were a bright kid. You should go make yourself known, Kai. Lot more people from the family around right now. I’ll hand out the beers, and make sure people know you brought them - leave it to me. All of it to me.”
You roll your eyes but thank him anyways, knowing he’s planning to keep a few more for himself - fair enough, he’s the one that took you under his wing to begin with.
