The drop of your hand signals the twang of a bowstring overhead, the only sound Jess the Kid has made all night. The range is short and the high angle means there is no arc to the plummet of the shaft. At this range, a shot with the right arrowhead can pierce even full-plate. The arrow sticks into the guard at the rear of the combat in the breastplate, halfway up to the fletching. His body slams into the side of the carriage, sending it jolting and further panicking the screaming horses. It’s not a kill shot, the man is struggling to stay upright even as his blood leaves a smear on the carriage door, but he’s all but out of the fight. Not Jess’s finest shot, but it seems to have done the job.
One of the ambushers, a short burly man that has the build of a brawler rather than a bravo, reaches the leftmost side of the carriage. He rips open the carriage door as his comrades move to finish off the last guard, only to stop dead in his tracks. You don’t see what happens inside, but you do hear a high-pitched whine coming from the direction of the carriage. With a sudden shock you realise that the noise is emanating from the attacker himself. In front of your very eyes, cracks appear in his body stiffening and the man tilts back from the side of the carriage with one and reaching out as if frozen in time. When body hits the cobblestone it shatters, cloth and flesh alike, as if it were fine glass.
