Yes, for all her mastery of elemental forces, she failed to muster a simple illness-mitigation spell to help fight off something as simple as a common cold. Oh, she might be able to tell you the history, uses, and dangers of yokai and asura to the East, an aziza to the South, as well as the best practices to summon and bind any spirit of the elemental planes, but ask her to patch a booboo and Izirina Henzler was practically helpless. She could remove a hex, but not remove a blister; list every great mage and the dates of their births and deaths going back a thousand years, but not so much as IDENTIFY skeletal simialrities or analogous organs between different organisms, let ALONE modify them!
“Wow,” she’s said one day, watching you work over your still-alive, pain-numbed newt with forceps in one hand and a cutting-wand in the other. “You’re really good at this sort of stuff, huh? With animals, and their bodies and life-force and stuff?”
“Yes,” you’d confirmed, feeling a little smug.
“Is it because you’re an—”
“It is NOT,” you’d snapped, wheeling on her, “because I am an ELF.”
“O-oh,” she’d replied, paling a little and falling silent as you quickly turned back about and began resuscitating the now-twitching amphibian, and began piecing it back together.
“It’s BECAUSE,” you’d said, feeling your face burn with embarrassment and (perhaps slightly misdirected) irritation, “I am BETTER than you.”
(At this, at least…)
