“A great light came down from the sky.” The scout says finally. “It destroyed the nearby town in an explosion of fire. The order came to evacuate…and then there was another beam of light. This time, it landed directly on Fort Merceus. There was another great explosion. We weren’t able to get everyone out in time. When the smoke cleared, the fort was just…gone. Along with the thousands of souls that were still inside.”
The room, which just a second ago resembled a tavern on any given feast day, suddenly went ghostly quiet. You felt a bead of sweat drip down your neck. You knew exactly what this was. Anemone had described it to you back at Arcadia. But even hearing about it, you never actually thought it would be possible. What the soldier in front of you was describing must have been none other than a Javelin of Light. You suddenly remember Odesse’s final warning to you before his death.
“Now you push too far. Back us into a corner, and only one option remains. When you watch as your world turns into naught but ash, remember that you brought it on yourself!”
“Where are Lord Seteth and Lady Byleth?” Leopold asks, breaking the silence in the room. “Have they survived?”
The soldier nods. “Both of them did. But we estimate that half the army was lost in that mysterious blast. Lord Seteth called for a retreat to the Great Bridge of Myrrdin. They are on their way back now to Garreg Mach to regroup.”
“Half the army…wiped out in an instant?” You hear a breathless knight comment as he leans back into his chair and begins laughing to himself.
“He said it came from the sky…could it have been the Goddess’ doing?” Another knight whispers in awe.
“Shut your mouth, heretic! Why would the Goddess attack her own soldiers!”
The room erupts into chaos once more, though this time, there’s pure panic in the air. Accusations of heresy, lying and lack of faith are being flung from one knight to another. You can sense the fear thick in the air. Though no one says it aloud, they all think the same thing.
If Fort Merceus could be destroyed in such a manner, what was to stop the enemy from doing the same to Garreg Mach?
You felt the ache of a sudden headache. So much for relaxation.
“Silence!” Leopold shouts. “I said order!” This time, however, your mentor struggles to bring the room back under his control. You’ve never seen him so flustered before. It was clear that even he was struggling with the news that half of the army, an army he helped train and get to their feet, could be taken out so quickly.
“Order!” Leopold shouts futilely.
