She gave you a playful wink, but you could tell that she was still in a world of pain. She had to know that she looked like a complete wreck right now, but she didn’t seem to let that affect her confidence. Or maybe it wasn’t real confidence at all. Could all her flirting be nothing more than bluster and bravado? Did she really expect you to reciprocate those feelings in her current state, or were these the games of a woman who, deep down, still saw herself as someone who was unable to be loved by non-mutants.
The thought depressed you, and you nearly missed Anastasia giving you a funny look when Iara blew a kiss at you. In front of Sophie, she hadn’t even looked remotely worried. But against someone that she couldn’t immediately stomp into the ground, she looked far more uncertain.
Glass nodded his agreement, pretending not to notice the entire exchange.
“Callisto’s done a lot for us, but I can’t help but think that having us go into hiding isn’t the right solution. I want to find a proper home for us one day. Somewhere we won’t be forced to fight, where humans won’t attack us or discriminate against us on sight. I don’t want a mutant utopia like Xavier or Magneto.”
Coexistence. It was such a novel concept for mutants, and it shouldn’t seem nearly as impossible as most people made it seem. As far as you could tell, mutants really weren’t so different from anyone else. Hell, these guys turned out to be better friends than you ever would’ve expected. They were kind, funny, and loyal to a fault. If you did right by them, they’d do right by you.
You weren’t sure if you were considered a ‘Friend to the Mutants” in their minds, but you’d like to believe that the Morlocks thought of you as an ally. Even if Callisto never actually referred to you as a friend out loud, it was your firm belief that you were quickly becoming best friends. Otherwise, she wouldn’t tolerate your presence during your training sessions.
“Let’s head back before anyone else shows up.”
Everyone nodded their agreement and turned to follow you, carrying W in tow. Although, there was something else that needed to be said here.
>”I hope you guys find what you’re looking for. If possible, I’d like to be the one to help you find it.”
>”I think I might know a way for you guys to improve your reputation in the city. There’s a woman called Silver Sable who’s looking for people to help her hunt down criminals. I think you guys would be a perfect fit for her little outfit.”
>”Maybe people would have a slightly better opinion of you guys if you rebranded your identities a bit. New costumes and new names, and all that.”
>”Hey, guys? Has Callisto ever called me her friend when I’m not around? If so, please let me know so I can tease her about it when we get back.”
>”And for the record, Iara, I like you too. So if you could try not to get mauled in nearly every fight you get into, that’d be great.”
