While she was distracted, you lunged forwards, but not so quick that you might end up tackling her. In an impressive display of elegant footwork, Callisto easily stepped out of the way of your charge and hopped several feet away from you.

“You’re gonna have to try harder than that if you want to catch me off guard. Or take lighter, less clumsy steps. Whichever comes first.” Callisto said in a mocking tone.

“Is that a challenge?” you asked, inching closer to her.

“I’d say that it roughly falls into the category of ‘much-needed advice’.” Callisto clarified.

“Why don’t you put your money where your mouth is? And I won’t accept ‘I don’t have a bank account’ as an excuse this time.”

Callisto nodded to herself as she chewed on her cheek.

“You must not be as fast a learner as I thought. Because it looks to me like you haven’t learned a damn thing from those training sessions.”

“Mama Huntsman always said that I was hard-headed.”

“Sounds like a wise woman.”

“She also told me never to put my hands on a woman.” you added with a shrug. “And yet…”

You burst into action, lunging straight at the Sewer Queen. Callisto’s eye widened, and she narrowly avoided getting caught by transitioning from a cartwheel to a springing somersault.

You turned on a dime, and leapt in the direction you thought she was in. You guessed right, but Callisto still managed to duck under your grasping arms and spin away from you.

You dug your fingers into the ground and catapulted yourself at her, only to find the mutant woman rolling off of your back and landing behind you. And that’s when you decided to show her some of the new moves you’ve been working on.

The moment you made contact with the ground, you became a sprawling mass of limbs moving at a dizzying pace. You turned end over end, contorting and stretching your arms and legs so that you never had to slow down while making a quick turn. And before either of you knew it, you were right in front of her again.

Callisto’s eye widened, and you went to grab for her again, only to find that your hand had been swatted away by her own. Then began the blinding exchange between master and student, your arms moving so fast that it might’ve looked like a quarrel between two multi-limbed combatants to an observer lacking a keen eye.

Unlike most of your training sessions, Callisto didn’t separate her arms into squid-like tendrils. That would’ve just given you more opportunities to grab a solid part of her body.

There was a strange rhythm to the exercise. You would reach for her hand, she would swat it away. You would reach for the hand that had just been used to deny your previous attempt, and Callisto would either jump away or shove some part of your body to throw off your balance so she could pull her arm back.

It was frustrating to say the least. But more than that…it was invigorating.

You punched, backhanded, elbowed and chopped mercilessly, turning your each and every movement into a lethal weapon. If you had time to waste on winding a fist back to strike him, then you could at least hit him along the way. You were strong enough where even slight movements like that were considered dangerous.

It was then that Callisto’s lessons were finally starting to click into place. She wasn’t trying to turn you into a martial arts master. She was trying to teach you how to use what you already had in spades.

You were the goddamned Huntsman. Everything about you was lethal if you wanted it to be. Your enhanced strength, speed and durability made you into a living weapon. All you needed was someone to show you how to use your gifts.

By the time Yoshimitsu had been able to get anywhere close to cutting himself free, he was already fading out in a burst of pixels as you literally punched him to pieces.

You were being too nice before. Sometimes, in order to win, brutality was required. Brutality, and a bit of desperation. You needed to fight like your life depended on it. Like a cornered rat, or some other feral animal.

The sound of nearby cheering was somewhat drowned out by your heart hammering in your ears and the sound of your own breath filling up your mask. You tried to focus on that as you locked eyes with your last two remaining opponents. Ryu was still shooting slow-moving projectiles, but your spider sense made it easy enough to anticipate where they’d be. Plus, you were pretty sure that you had a good idea of their max range.

Both Ryu and Kazuya had taken combat-ready stances, and were trying to anticipate your next move.

What will you do?

>Close in on Ryu, try to bait out a flashy move from him, and then punish him when he whiffs.
>Subject Kazuya to your overwhelming offense. He can’t punish you if he can’t keep up with you.
>Trap Kazuya in an infinite grab-chain. You’d like to see him tech your throws when your hands are literally stuck to his body.
>Pull out your pistols and unload on Ryu. Your projectiles are better than his, and you can fire them a lot faster.
>Write-in.

Callisto gave you a sly grin. “Huntsman, you’re never gonna be able to break through my defenses with only your fists. All that training was just to tune your reflexes and kinetic vision. You’ve gotten better at split-decision making, sure, but you’re fairly limited in your combat options if you leave out some of your most powerful abilities.”

Huh. Apparently, superhuman attributes didn’t account for much when you were being outclassed in a fight. Despite having the ability to cling to Callisto’s tentacles with your sticky fingers, she could easily turn the tables on you by slamming you into a hard surface or coiling her free appendages around your body.

“Fair enough. Just don’t complain when I start giving you a hard time.” you said, taking a combat-ready stance.

Callisto did the same. “Less talking, more fighting!”

Over the course of this particular training session, you felt like you’d learned a lot. Specifically, you learned just how important it is to weave webshots between strikes and parries. There were many times when Callisto would’ve been able to smack you around, had it not been for a well aimed webshot that glued a foot or stray tentacle to the floor or a nearby wall. She always broke out quickly, but they bought you crucial moments to readjust, plan your next attack, or simply steal her momentum.

She looked annoyed by the fact that you were covering her black boots in webbing, but you assured her that they would eventually dissolve and flake off.

Fighting with the use of your webs was a huge help, but it was by no means a stroll down easy street. The cramped, confined spaces of the sewers were a far cry from the open oasis of opportunity that was the streets of New York. There was so much to make use of up there. Down here, you found yourself relying on little more than what you brought down with you. And you figured that that was probably the point of the exercise.

One day you would be caught out, having no gadgets or fancy tricks to use, and it would come down to an all-out slug match. A no-holds-barred brawl. One that you couldn’t afford to lose. You just had to hope that you were prepared when the moment finally came.
