You nodded your approval, which seemed to assuage some of her worries. “That’s fine by me. Just get us there, go back and get Pete, and get somewhere safe.”
“I will.” she agreed, walking towards you until she was standing directly in front of you and Nico.
“Hold on.” she warned, placing a hand on both your shoulders. And in the very next instant, the world around you shifted.
You were no longer standing on Madame Web’s property. There was still grass under your feet, but instead of an abundance of trees and open land, you were now surrounded by old buildings and fleeing civilians.
“Good luck.” Vic whispered, before winking out of existence.
You turned to stare at the empty space that she used to occupy, and in that very moment, your spider sense flared to life.
Without thinking, you threw yourself to the side and curled your arms and legs inwards as you performed a quick somersault. Nico had simply erected a force field to block the incoming energy bolts. They looked bright blue, miniature comets, and they gave off the faint smell of ozone.
You were pretty sure that these shots were meant to stun, but getting hit by enough of these would kill anyone that still had a functioning nervous system.
It wasn’t hard to identify the Spider Slayers amidst the chaos. There weren’t that many attacking the school grounds, so you guessed that Pandora was occupying the majority of them.
At least, you hoped that was still the case. You’ve never seen her in action, but you figured that she wouldn’t have become the Director of WAND without acquiring a few skills along the way.
You surveyed the area carefully, paying close attention to your spider sense for any hint of the remaining Spider Slayers. They’d already gotten too close to the campus for your liking.
And that’s when you felt it. Somewhere nearby, there was a pair of them going after someone. You pursued the feeling without hesitation, confident that your spider sense would never mislead you. And you weren’t disappointed.
Two Spider Slayers were actively pursuing an old janitor. The poor guy was running for his life, stumbling and staggering with nearly every step. And right before a volley of paralyzing bolts could slam into his back, you swooped down, scooped him up and carried him off.
The Spider Slayers refocused their attention on you, most likely preparing to shoot you both out of the sky. But before they could even attempt such a thing, Nico’s staff came hurtling towards them, tearing through the killer robots like a hot knife through butter.
It continued spinning through the air, circling the area in a savage arc, cutting through any and all Spider Slayers in its path before returning to her hand.
“Damn…” you muttered, unable to hide your admiration.
“Thank you, young man!” the janitor said, rising shakily to his feet and enthusiastically shaking your hand. “How can I ever repay you?”
