"A plane? It'll take some doing but I can arrange it."
"No, not a plane. A plan. I've been drinking, man."
"Ah I see."
"Look, I trust you to keep anyone uninvolved safe. Just get back to me when you have an idea how to do that."
"Will do, Officer. I appreciate the trust."
"Sure thing, Q."
You hang up and walk to the mirror, splashing some cold water on your face, your reflection stares back at you. For once the city is silent, alcohol always did keep the voices at bay.
You return to the bar and get your last bottle, it doesn't take long for you to polish it off and try to get home. Banks thanks you for the night out, he seems a lot better off than before your talk. You hand the bartender your keys and ask him to keep em in the box out front, you'll grab em in the morning. He obliges and gets you set up with a cab home.
You make it inside near midnight and fall asleep almost as soon as you hit the sheets, the alcohol gently lowering you to bed. Until the voice of the city comes back.
You stand outside staring at your own apartment, dim and grey in the light of Gotham's streetlamps. Your lungs pull and release cold air, the smell of the rotten alley next door curls your nose hairs.
"Why the fuck do we gotta go up this way?" You find yourself asking as you approach a rusty ladder.
"You got his front fuckin door key?" A harsher voice replies to you, belonging only to a faceless shifting void.
"Nah but what if he's home?"
"Do you see his car on the street? Look he's doing all this nosing around, he's talking to Banks. They're both still at the bar, so quit your fuckin yapping and start climbing."
You extend your hand, covered in a leather glove and grasp the rung of the ladder, pulling yourself up you feel a foot slip and collide with the post.
"Shit!" You call oout as a metallic clanking and banging echo into the alleyway.
The same sound wakes you up in bed, in a cold sweat.
