The Chameleon gave you a searching look, before letting out a resigned sigh and laying back in his bed. “Your brother has strong ties with Nick Fury, and was therefore privy to valuable information. The majority of my forces were only there to distract Flint Marko. Our teleporter was tasked with capturing your brother, sister and nephew, but she was interrupted by that walking pile of sand before she could complete her first task.” he explained. “With her out of commission, I decided to make a move on your sister myself. Her file was strangely incomplete, and I was of the opinion that she was an agent of Nick Fury as well. But…it would appear that I was completely wrong in my assessment of her.”
A scowl was resting on his face now, and you could tell that the frustration from underestimating your sister and ultimately losing to her was still eating at him.
“Your nephew was simply going to be held as collateral.” he continued. “A hostage that I could use in order to buy time for my escape. The attack on your parent’s house was mostly staged, set up in such a way to divert your attention and split your forces.”
“So you did all of this just to steal Warren’s research, find out about Nick Fury’s whereabouts and get revenge on me?” you concluded. “Don’t you think you might’ve overextended a bit here?”
“What else was I to do when you were actively hunting me and ruining all of my business endeavors?” he said with a snarl, shooting up from his relaxed position on the bed. “You denied me the shield, and interrupted my deal with Miles Warren. Had I not done something drastic, you would have come for me sooner or later, if only to preserve your secret identity.”
You supposed that was true, but it didn’t excuse any of what he’d done.
“Be that as it may, you went too far when you targeted people that had absolutely nothing to do with this.” you said. “For the most part, I’m considering cutting your men some slack, since they’re just taking orders. But that all changes if they refuse to stand down and end up doing something extremely stupid.”
Well…something ELSE extremely stupid, anyway. You intended to pass on whatever information you found out about them to your crime lord friends. You were going to let them take care of these Russian interlopers.
As for the Chameleon, you were REALLY leaning towards putting a bullet in his head once this was all over. But if he could sweeten the pot somehow, then you might be inclined to reconsider that verdict. If he could pull that off, you wouldn’t have any problems with letting Hill throw him in a S.H.I.E.L.D. cell in exchange for some government cred.
