It seemed like the people of Oceanippon didn't share a united identity— unlike the Japan of your old world— but instead three main species competed and cooperated with each other in the islands; kitsune, tanuki, and humans.
Beyond that, there were the more 'amiable' species of yokai that lived on the island with their own smaller societies. Yet a large part of Oceanippon was fighting and surviving against monsters, most of whom were considered to be oni.
Still, the main three species— human, kitsune, and tanuki alike— were only united under the Emperor and the system of Oceanippon, mostly to defend themselves against the hordes of monsters and malicious yokai. Later Yumi would tell you that the yokai were nearly impossible to befriend, her own experiences as evidence— but whether these attempts failed because of them or because of Yumi, you didn't know.
So, in other words, if Oceanippon was Japan, then most humans in the northern islands (which Yumi was part of) were this world's version of the Ainu (with more than a few differences, apparently). But there were still some human communities in the south. You'd need to talk with Ayane again about this just to get an understanding of what modern Oceanippon looks like when compared to the picture Yumi painted.
"You still haven't answered my question." You noted.
"Sheesh, I was getting there." She said, looking like she wanted to roll her eyes. She didn't, however. "After my corporeal form shattered, I, now a spectral phantom, haunted the very grounds where I once served as a mere mortal! For eons, I plagued them with my deadly hexes! Know this, mortal: my spectral torment was a curse of eternal despair... Kekekeke!" Yumi then proceeded to recount of all the pranks and annoying things she pulled on the samurai guy and his household. Though described with an exaggerated floweriness, none of her acts seemed that bad. You couldn't tell if this was merely because recently became a ghost, or because she had a soft spot for her former boss's family in her heart.
"And I'm guessing you either got kicked out or you left after they passed away." You said.
"I was gonna leave anyway." Yumi huffed.
"You sure seem to know quite a bit about Oceanippon." You noted.
"I wandered throughout the countryside, avoiding priestesses and shrine maidens while listening to the tales of wanderers and traders."
"Were the shrine maidens trying to exorcise you?"
"Forsooth. Though their deeds reeked of folly, I can understand why most would be wary of a wandering phantom." Yumi had a rare moment of introspection. "Moreover, I refused to become another monstrous spirit that attacks others at random."
"But wasn't attacking people your whole thing when you were freed from the room?"
"No it wasn't!" She denied it.
"The first thing you did when revealing yourself was put a death curse on me and my first wife." You deadpanned.
