If you look back to 80s - 90s era warhammer or other fantasy (even the White Wolf Vampire Masquerade stuff, or Wesley Snipes Blade) there was a lot of this sort of unsubtle grotesque comedy often mixed with gore and ultraviolence. I wonder if this trend of subversive satirical fantasy dates back at least to Defoe (he was a spy, agitator) and Swift, maybe even Chaucer?
