Wilhelm soon heard the creaking of wood and iron, and the huge gates swung open. Inside the town was a riot of color and activity. Streamers and flags were strung all across the open spaces. Ahead of him was a tall inn. He saw a stable that he thought might be safer than leaving Asphodel tied up in the open. Musicians and dancers cavorted to one side, and further on were market stalls crowded with all kinds of goods for sale. From somewhere he could hear the clinking of a blacksmith's hammer. A woodsman approached Asphodel and held up a fat bird as he called to Wilhelm.
