A dry mouth and a grinding stomach made the decision for her. Mel tucked ‘Student of Magic’ into the meager shelter beneath it’s previous owner and set out down the arid hill rising out of the forest. The east was an expanse of dead trees, probably not much to eat there. To the south was the valley of the birds, still circling overhead. The forest sprawling to the west and north was probably the best chance of finding water.
She descended carefully, stopping as she came to a section of hill towards the bottom that had seemingly been gouged away, leaving an exposed swathe of rock. Mel navigated around it, then made the pleasant discovery of a trickle of water. She followed it back to the exposed cliff face where a trickle of water gurgled out. Her hands shot out of their own accord, letting the cool water cup into them and she sipped it carefully. A meager supply, but a supply. She pressed her canteen against the spring, letting the water trickle in until it was filled. That was one pressing need filled, although it would be a daily chore to get water to drink or cook with. Maybe she could increase the flow somehow?
