Reaching around for your Resonance Amplifier, you were relieved to find that it was mostly undamaged by your sudden outburst. You activated it, pointed it at the last remaining demon and cranked it up to the highest setting.
This had better work…!
“Everyone, move!”
Without asking why, everyone other than the demon obeyed your command. It turned to snarl at you, only to be blasted by a deafeningly high-pitched, concentrated soundwave. The resulting attack shattered the glass of nearby windows and shook you to your very core. Even with the built-in stabilizers, you regretted not creating a pair of webbed earmuffs before firing this thing. But your reaction was far more tame than the demon’s.
It clutched at its ears and roared in pain. Its hair seemed to stand on end as it straightened and squirmed as if it was a living thing. After a few seconds, it appeared to adjust slightly to the head-splitting pain, and began to stomp towards you. The closer it got, the more the sound-waves grew in intensity. Despite this, the demon forged on. It ignored the rippling and tearing of its red flesh, the bleeding of its ears, and likely the rupturing of its internal organs. Even still, it fought with every fiber of its being to reach you, even going so far as to dig its knuckle blades into the ground to gain a bit more traction.
You took a step back, and the relentless monster took that as encouragement. It roared, spitting blood and bile as it did so, before leaping high into the air! You moved to track it with your sonic cannon, but the demon seemed determined to end your life before you could do any further damage to it.
It wound its arm back to strike at you, and…a cluster of thick, crystal spears impaled it from the side, interrupting its momentum and weighing it down to the point of causing it to plummet back down to the ground.
You opened your mouth to thank Glass for the assist, but he looked just as confused as you did. And those crystals had come from the wrong direction, so who…?
“I hope I wasn’t interrupting anything. Now seemed like the opportune time to step in.”
A familiar voice came from a nearby alleyway, and a woman with dark skin and an even darker cloak walked out to greet you. For a second you’d forgotten her name, but seeing the cross branded on her left cheek instantly reminded you of your encounter with her. This was Oya, Louise’s superior in the Nightguard!
Her eyes shone with bright, mismatched color. One was vibrant blue, and the other blazing orange. Those brilliant eyes flicked towards the ground, and her hand moved out of her cloak.
The air around you noticeably dropped in temperature, and the downed demon, which had been slowly creeping towards you, was now a pincushion filled with thick ice shards.
Once it had stopped moving entirely, Oya returned her attention to you.
“Thanks for the assist. But if you don’t mind me asking, what’re you doing here?”
