>>5182200She lowers her voice to a whisper. “I first noticed something was off a while back, when the first student disappeared. Since then, I’ve done some of my own investigating, away from the others.”
>“Away? But why?”“Things have been weird lately; you can’t trust anyone. Especially not with…” She looks up again, searching for any intruders. “Look, you’re going to think I’m crazy but…I don’t think we can trust the adults here. Were you told about the abandoned chapel where some students have supposedly been spotted?”
>“I was.” No sense in lying about it if Monica already knows about the supposed “confidential information.”“I think the students have been going there on their own. There’s this weird house in the residential district of the monastery. I’ve been hanging out around the area for a while now, hoping to get a whiff of any suspicious activity. That’s when I saw them. Monica and Xavier. And some of the other students that went missing too. I didn’t think anything of it at first. It wasn’t too unusual. But before I realized it, I noticed that all the students that entered that house were the same ones that went missing a few days later.”
>“W-what?! Why didn’t you tell anyone?”Monica looks at you seriously now, all traces of her usual mirth gone. “I did some digging. The house in question belongs to a Bishop of the Church of Seiros. Reynauld is his name. He’s pretty high-ranking, and he answers only to the Seneschal and the Archbishop. He’d also be keenly aware of that strange chapel. I’m afraid getting the Church involved may not be an option here. The Knights won’t take my word over his, and if he finds out something’s up, he’ll likely cover his tracks.”
>“Then why tell me? I didn’t even think you liked me!” “I hear you’re something of a helper. And well, I need help. If Reynauld really has been kidnapping students, there’s a good chance he may have some relation to the Death Knight and the group that abducted me. Besides, I figured you’d want to get a crack at this guy too if he’s really got your friends.”
>“Just what are you suggesting?” You ask, dread mounting.“Well, I’m glad you’re willing to hear me out.” Her smile returns. “I’ve been studying this guy’s patterns. He’ll be involved with church service for the next few hours. I want to break into his house and see if I can find any information on the missing students. But to do that, I’ll need a lookout. All I need is for you to stand watch. I can do the rest. I may not look it, but I’m probably the sneakiest and stealthiest student in the entire Officer’s Academy, let alone the Black Eagles.”
You’re not sure. Breaking into a Bishop’s house obviously carries some risk behind it, but something in Monica’s voice tells you she isn’t lying, and you’re desperate to help your friends.
