The leader of the Bogbarri does as you command… But clearly not without reservation.
“Why?” he demands. “And why should I obey you? We have deal, but I am not one of your lizards, Copper.”
“I know that,” you say, holding back a sigh of irritation. “But we need information, and we’re entitled to ‘meat’ of our own… Or slaves, since the meat here is so abundant.”
You gesture to the rows upon rows of dead dwarves—burnt dwarves, skewered dwarves, and many, MANY crushed dwarves. Virtually all of the adult males of the settlement lay dead.
“Take however many you want,” you reassure him. “That should be enough to feed your tribe, for quite some time.”
“Maybe,” he spits, “now that we have fewer mouths. But there is another hunger, Copper, beyond the stomach. The heart hungers, also.”
You release your sigh, but not in annoyance. Rather, it is one of empathy, understanding, shared grief. You nod.
“I understand,” you tell him. “We have suffered a loss, also. But Bogbarri… There will be other villages, other ‘company-towns’. You will HAVE your revenge on their race. We both will. But we need these ones alive. The agreement must be upheld.”
