“I swear to the moon, B! If you die again from something stupid like that, I'm having Khonshu bring you back, just so I can kill you myself!”
“Bet it feels good to scream, huh?” he said, still grinning as he lowered the massive axe with one hand.
“Wanna see me use my claws too?” you asked, extending them with a promise of impending violence.
“Alright, you crazy kids…” Ben said, walking up beside you and placing a hand on both your shoulders. “Maybe we should take this conversation somewhere else, huh? There's sort of a war going on outside.”
“I agree.” Ammit said, stepping a little closer. “There is still work to be done.”
B gave her a solemn nod, and slowly hefted the axe over his shoulder. He tirned you and spoke.
“Huntsman, right?”
“You remembered. Nice to have you back in the flesh, Morb junior. I'm sure your boss'll be even more thrilled to see you.”
“How's he been holding up?” B asked gently.
“Old Morby? Stoic as always. Hasn't been the same since he lost you, though.” Ben answered.
B shook his head.
“I hope he hasn't let the place fall apart. That's about the only neutral ground we've got left in the state.”
“I haven’t been back in a while, but I think the place should still be up and running.” Ben answered.
“That's good. He'll have to figure out how to run the place without me for a while.”
“What do you mean?” you asked, concern clear in your voice.
“I'm…not gonna be able to stick around all the time. Ammit and Ma'at have got work for me to do.” B explained, gesturing to the bipedal croc woman. “Condition of me being brought back like this. You'll understand in a bit.”
He then turned to face the hallway where you'd entered this stairwell.
“Be on your guard, my priestess.” Khonshu's voice warned.
Your vulpine ears perked up, and you were sure that you could hear footsteps coming from down the hall.
“Something's coming.” you said, popping out your claws.
“Spider-Sense isn't acting up. Wonder what it is.” Ben speculated as smoke began to rise from the inside of his palms.
Ammit made no move at all. She just continued to stand there. A tense silence fell over the room. Everyone was waiting for something to happen, or someone else to make a move. And when it became clear that those footsteps were coming closer, even Mercy began to shiver in anticipation.
“Whatever they are, they have no idea what they are up against. Khonshu himself, and another of the Ennead stand before them.” she bragged.
You were inclined to agree, but you couldn't afford to relax just yet.
After another minute, two figures came into view. And due to your superior night vision, you recognized them immediately. As well as what they carried. Or…who they carried.
