>>5317506But then… Something happens. The berserker’s expression twists. He twitches, his muscles pulse, but he does not bring the hammer down. Instead… he slowly, gradually, sinks to one knee. His arms sink down to his sides, the maul slipping from his fingers. His eyes bug out and he stares at you in hate and confusion, as if you did this to him…
20But it was Glowie. Her hands reach out weakly to grab his leg, and her mouth—including distinctly non-reptiloid mandibles hidden at the rear of her mouth—are sunk dep into the meat of the human’s powerfully-muscled calf. Her throat throbs and flexes as hidden glands pump ounce after ounce of paralytic venom into your would-be killer.
“D-disohonour,” the human grunts n the Northern Common-tongue, his voice as heavily-accented as your own.
And then… He falls, like a stone dislodged by a breeze, tumbling down into depths unknown. He lands face-first. He scarcely breathes. He does not move.
“You… Okay?” Glowie asks, dislodging her fangs from her victim with come effort.
You force yourself up into a sitting position, still not quite able to stand. You look at the human who very nearly slew you, and then at the bug—looking half-dead herself—who saved you.
“Sorry,” she says, looking as if she might cry again. “Tried… But failed. Failed my king…”
Glowie’s eyes begin to slide shut, her strength failing her.
“Glowie…”
"I'm sorry," she whimpers, and says no more.
“The half-elf!” Tessu shouts.
“He’s getting away!” Ivno shrieks. “Get him! Stop him!”
You force yourself you your feet, ripping away your now-uncomfortable chest-armour and taking a deep, shuddering breath. Glowie, for her part, is in no shape to rejoin the fray—that last effort was all she had left in her.
What do you do?
