“We’ll see about that.” Avenger spat as she hopped into the air and began hovering above the line of the buildings. You weren’t in the city-center right now, so the buildings themselves generally weren’t more than two stories tall. Facing the direction of the sounds of battle, she twirled her staff a few times before thrusting it forward and sending what appeared to be a small, spiraling drill of air pressure propelling though the air. After a few seconds of concentration, she reported back, “It looks like we have a bigger catch than expected! There’s a river leading to a harbor to the south-east, about 1.5 kilometers off, where a fleet of triremes are having a naval battle with some kind of… what’s it called again… come here Master, I’ll show you.”
Quickly walking toward her and carefully stepping around her magic circles as she landed, you saw she offered one of her hands palm-up toward you. Gently laying one of your hands over hers, a still image flashes into your mind. You can see over a dozen triremes waiting in the harbor, seemingly on stand-by, while two more were crashed into a ship you vaguely recognize as a pirate ship, which appears to have tried to flee into the river, probably hoping to choke off the triremes’ numerical advantage. In addition, boarding parties from each of the two crashed triremes seemed to be fighting a crew of pirates, not having fought their way onto the ship’s deck yet.
Quickly thinking the situation over, you advise, “When you’re ready to fire, concentrate your attacks at the fleet on stand-by at first so it can’t effectively retreat, then split about a quarter of your fire off toward the ships crashed together. The ones in that melee shouldn’t be able to withdraw quickly. If at all possible I’d like us to destroy both factions at once.”
Hopping back above the buildings, Avenger answered, “My thoughts exactly. I’ll probe that location once more to confirm the fleet’s position and see if they’re moving.” Shooting off another one of those air-pressure drill things (you plan to ask her how those work sometime later), she hovered above the buildings once more for a few seconds before settling down at your side again. With a nod, she confirmed she was ready to fire.
