Mel stifled a yawn, then stiffened as the whimpering started.
"Mom?" A voice echoed from the well. "Mom! I need help! Someone!"
Mel's legs tangled, seemingly caught with each other, nearly sending her to the ground. Was the haze getting thicker?
"It hurts! Someone help!"
"<span class="mu-g">Aers.</span>" Air pushed out from her face, pushing back haze. "Better." Mel shook her head and looked around, ignoring the voice for the moment. Shining, beautiful, enticing flowers and fruits all around and a concerning feeling that every bit of it was trying to kill her.
The voice in the well was sobbing now. She bit her lip, hard enough to ache, pain felt very safe at the moment. She peered over the edge of the stone ring carefully.
Her eyes were having an argument. There was either a heap of bones, bird, human, animals of all kinds, or a scared child that looked just like a little sister she'd lost long ago. The image flickered, like an optical illusion, the shadows of one becoming the reality of the other. Part of her shuddered, knees trembling, wanting to fall down and cry.
The rest of her was angry. "<span class="mu-b">Arx.</span>" An icy spear slid out out of the side of the well, tip resting on the opposite side. "Cut it out, or I'll find a way to hurt you. <span class="mu-b">Arx.</span>" Another spear slid out, lower down, tip digging into the old grout of the stonework.
The little girl stared at her wide eyed for a moment, then grinned, revealing far too many teeth, although it glanced nervously at the spears overhead. Mel glowered down at it, calling a third one.
"You're a strong one. Would you care to-" It paused to lick its face with a too long tongue. "Make a mutually beneficial arrangement?"
"I'm a little busy, and I'm not sure you even exist." Mel turned away and examined the glowing fruit over her head. Aers? Arx Merco? Or the simplest option, her humble telekinesis wand. There was a scrabbling sound in the well, and a hiss.
She pointed her wand at the fruit, sending out a tendril of smoke. The fruits were firmly attached, but she managed to snatch three from the tree, sending shudders through the branches each time.
"Oh, I'm quite real, although I understand the confusion. See, I could be useful to one like you, a witchling seeming power. I could give you gifts, all in exchange for a simple service."
"Uh huh." Mel turned her wand on the flowering bushes. Berries and flowers floated in bunches into her backpack. Something thrashed in the bushes, but at the distance of the wand it couldn't do much. "I've got power plenty."
"Think about it, little witch! I can give you power!"
Mel glared back at the well. Maybe it was the haze talking but she had to wonder.
