«As long as you can get some time alone, I expect it'll be fine. At least in the short-term. It shouldn't impede our plans.»
«You're fortunate the camp has little to offer you at this stage.»
You take issue with the "our" in "our plans," but whatever. If Richard's fine with it, you're not going to convince him otherwise. Gil's not back yet. Should you really stand here in the open? What if somebody walks by and sees you? You stick your head into Monty's tent. (He forgot to re-tie it shut.) "Monty?"
"Ah!" He flinches. "You're still here?"
"Did you think I'd leave in three minutes? I'm working on it. Can I come in?"
Monty looks annoyed, but gestures. You come just inside the doorway. "There was something else I forgot to tell you. Um, I already told it to your fake mind copy, but I don't think you— you don't remember that." He's giving you a funny look. "Okay, that's what I thought. Anyways. I think you should be nicer to yourself."
Monty shuts his eyes. "And why's that?"
"Because I think you're a good person. I don't care if you did some stupid things years ago. I found out I did a lot of stupid things years ago, or... or even more recently than that, and do I beat myself up about it? No! Because I think positive, and I— I don't have to be like that anymore, if I don't want to. Not if I try my best not to be. And you try your best every single day, don't you? You try harder than anybody else in the world."
"I'm certain that's not true."
"It is true! I didn't even know there was anything wrong with you until that thing with the spooky dimension happened, which wasn't your fault. Um, everything afterwards was my fault, actually, I think. My, um... my detectivess instincts activated." You look down. "I'm sorry I pried so much. And I— I'm sorry if I was a jerk about it. It wasn't because I thought you were evil, though, so— yeah. I don't see how killing people who sign up to get killed is so bad, if they really did sign up, and it sounded like you didn't even really want to be a spooky mask person, they were making you be one, so I don't know what the evil part is supposed to be. I think you're sort of blowing it out of proportion."
Monty is sitting up straight, but doesn't respond.
"And even if you were evil, I still think you probably had a redemption arc. Like in the books. I know you said you didn't, but I don't think you're super trustworthy about yourself, so... yeah. You're nice now and everybody likes you. I think everybody?" Does Eloise like him? She seemed kind of scared of him. "Pretty much everybody likes you, and you're helpful all the time, and you let me and Gil stay here, so I just don't know what the big deal is. I think it's all in your head, basically. I— I kind of don't think anybody would even care about the spooky mask thing, if you told them. Like, why would Madrigal care? She's your friend. Friends don't care if you murdered a lot of people, because they're your friend. I think you should tell her about it."
